PANJIM:  Smart City authorities began the works of reconstruction of the drains near Jama Masjid in Panjim, on Wednesday, to ensure that drains are not flooded due to heavy rains. On Saturday, the drains and the road near Jama Masjid was flooded. The Smart City authorities have thus decided to rectify the fault in the drainage to prevent future flooding.

On April 20, the unseasonal torrential rains had lashed the city. The heavy downpour caused water to enter into shops and houses, leaving the Panjim locals distressed and helpless. The inadequate drainage system was unable to handle the heavy influx of rainwater, resulting in chaos and property damage. Much of the flooding was caused due to the Smart City works.

To avoid such a situation from recurring, the Smart City authorities have begun the reconstruction of the drains near Jama Masjid in Panjim. The primary objective of this project is to ensure that the drains are deep enough to handle heavy rains and prevent flooding in the city. The drains will be constructed below the road level, allowing them to accumulate rainwater without spilling onto the road and entering shops.

The Smart City authorities had recently constructed a new drainage system in Panjim, just before the unseasonal rain shower in the city, yet it could not sustain one heavy shower. Hence the authorities are reconstructing the drains again in the city.
