The government has granted in-principal approval to the proposal that also suggests displaying belongings of the martyrs in each of the eight wards of the 17th century Portuguese built structure. “Each cell will be named after legendry freedom fighters who played a major role in the liberation struggle. Their unique photos, biography and belongings like letters, clothes or any articles they used during the long movement will also be displayed,” Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar told Herald.
Some freedom fighters, he said had put forth the suggestion to the government in order to keep the memories alive and recognize the courage and sacrifize of the sons of the soil. The minister said the renovation of the oldest prison will be carried out in consultation with the architects and freedom fighters.
Meanwhile, Chandrakant Kerkar, who was jailed in Aguada by the Portuguese has welcomed the move while he also suggested that government should include names of all those non-Goan freedom fighters too who participated in the struggle for Goa's liberation.
“The restoration will ensure its sanctity is not lost. The work will strengthen the life of the structure. While carrying out the work, we will again take into confidence the concerned individuals,” he said adding that the tourism board is expected to hold another meeting with the survivors and the legendaries’ generation on the project.
The names and contribution of the other freedom fighters will also find a place as one part of the prison will be dedicated to them. The initiative will not only attract tourists and history lovers but the Fort is expected to also encourage educational visits from Goa and other states.
As the historical structure is situated against the backdrop of Aguada sea, the department also contemplates to stage water fountain with sound and light system, and an eco-friendly food court for its visitors. “The water fountain will showcase short movies of the freedom struggle. It will entertain the public with the introduction of the new system and also educate/refresh the history,” he said.
However, these proposals are in the pipeline pending final approval as the tourism department awaits cabinet clearance in the next two months after another set of discussion with the stakeholders. Once approved, the coming tourist season will include this in their itinerary.
