TCP Minister appealed to the FDA Minister to act decisively to put to rest the doubts in peoples’ mind over safety of fish
MARGAO: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Churchill Alemao on Monday demanded stringent punitive action against those responsible for lacing fishwith formalin, while Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai appealed to the FDA Minister to act decisively to put to rest the doubts in peoples’ mind over the safety of the fish.
Churchill alleged that at least for the last 30 years Goans have been fed with formalin-laced fish because of which the number of cancer cases in the State have increased manifold. He alleged that fish brought from the eastern coast during monsoon in Goa was lacedwith formalin.“In Tamil Nadu they have freezers but no ice plant and as one kg ice is required to keep a kg of fish fresh, formalin is used to increase the fish shelf life,” he said pointing out that earlier Goans used to depend on dry fish during the monsoon.“Around 3 years back we used to eat fresh fish caught in the rivers or ponds or otherwise depend on dry fish,” he said and accused the agents of lacing fish with formalin to Goans during the monsoon by affecting their health as at present practically every household has a cancer patient or person, who died of such disease.
He said the government has totally failed the people of Goa by letting those, who brought the formalin-laced fish, go scot free and for permitting them to sell the same in the market. “Actually the government should have arrested and filed cases against those who brought the formalin-laced fish,” he said and added that if the drivers were booked they would have revealed the names of the agents.
According to Churchill, the people who sold the fish in other states contacted the Food and Drug Administration in Goa informing them about the formalin-laced fish sent to Goa and that is why the raid was conducted without even informing the ministers.“The bullying tactics of the agents had angered the vendors there and that is why they tipped off the FDA who did the test, which was positive but unfortunately our politicians got involved and negated the whole thing,” he said and added that the government should have at least booked the persons who brought such fish to Goa.
He pointed out that the life span of Goans is reducing as they are consuming food that is unhealthy. “Instead of free-range chicken which were used by the consumers earlier, today the cortisone loaded farm bred chicken are preferred,” he said adding that even vegetables and fruits are laced with chemicals.“Today per day there are at least 10 cancer cases being detected because of the change in our lifestyle and the things we eat,” he said demanding that the government take stringent action against the fish agents to stop formalin-laced fish being sold in Goan market. TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai admitted that people had their doubst on the quality of fish.
