Arambol resident’s phone hacked, offensive content sent to contacts

PERNEM: There has been a surge in various forms of cheating facilitated by misuse of mobile phones especially since financial transactions are predominantly done through these devices. An Arambol resident was lucky, since though his phone was hacked, no financial fraud was committed by using his device.

On Tuesday, a young man from Madhlawada, Arambol received a seemingly legitimate message prompting him to pay his electricity bill. Believing it to be genuine, he followed instructions provided through a mobile number provided in the message, leading him to download an app.

He proceeded to download the app, which later proved to be a gateway for trouble. That same night, his WhatsApp account security was compromised, and offensive content was spread to contacts on his list.

The situation came to light when concerned friends reached out to him upon receiving the unsolicited messages. Fortunately, no financial fraud was reported, but the incident prompted the immediate blocking of his mobile phone and halting of all transactions.
