PANJIM: At the time when the traffic police have been coming up with new ideas to enforce traffic discipline among the citizens, a new technology is expected to be introduced. Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said the government has been discussing how to make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to nab the traffic violators.

“AI will be integrated with latest cameras to track violations and even the movement of vehicular traffic. It will facilitate sending automatic challans to the traffic violators’ residential address,” he said, after chairing the State Road Safety Council meeting at Secretariat on Monday.

The State government has however not set any timeline for its implementation as the proposal is still at the discussion stage.

In an attempt to curb traffic violation and bring road discipline, the State police had introduced the Traffic Sentinel - a brainchild of former Director General of Goa Police Muktesh Chander over two years ago. The controversial concept is presently being reviewed by the government after it led to heated conflicts between the locals and “sentinels” over reporting of violation to the police escalated in some parts of the State.

Meanwhile, Godinho assured that road safety is of paramount importance as the government is laying emphasis to improve and take safety measures along the dark spots, accident prone zones and dangerous curves.

GOACAN Convener Roland Martins, who was also present at the meeting, told reporters that among many issues, the Committee is reviewing improvising facilities of trauma care. “The minister has given directions about what can be done in terms of trauma care on the national highways is concerned,” he added.
