PORVORIM: Minister for Public Works Department (PWD) Nilesh Cabral assured the House on Thursday of constructing a service road at Char Rasta in Colvale as one of the measures to prevent road accidents.

St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar, through a calling attention motion tabled in the House, emphasised the urgent need for a flyover near Dhonkhamb at Dhargal and Char Rasta at Colvale, where numerous accidents have been reported.

In response, the PWD Minister stated that the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor from Dhargal, costing Rs 100 crore, has been included in the annual plan pending approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Regarding the road crossing at Char Rasta in Colvale, the original plan for the four-lane National Highway from Patradevi to Karaswado included provision for a light vehicular underpass due to its critical nature.

“The site houses the St Anthony Chapel, which holds a history of over 100 years. Its dismantling was initially required for construction, but strong opposition from locals led to the decision of preserving the chapel. Consequently, the construction of the vehicular underpass had to be abandoned. However, an underpass exists 550 meters away at Mushirwado Colvale from the Char Rasta crossing and is currently in use,” Cabral explained.

Cabral continued, “The process of land acquisition has been completed, and a service road connecting to the existing underpass will be initiated shortly, extending up to Char Rasta”.
