MARGAO: Residents of Assolna village have criticised the Assolna police outpost for being ineffective and unable to handle the needs of the local population and have thus demanded for a separate police station itself in the village.

The residents made this demand after a theft was reported at Regina Martyrum High School at Assolna.

Their demands were supported by Velim MLA Cruz Silva who said he would take up the matter with the State government and reiterated that the Assolna outpost had to be upgraded immediately.

The locals were upset that the Cuncolim police station, which has a vast area under its jurisdiction, only has one vehicle, thus there are many occasions wherein the police are unable to respond to emergency situations quickly.

Silva also pointed out that the Velim Police station was also non-functional due to lack of adequate manpower and other resources.

Furthermore, he lamented that the Cuncolim police station is also severely understaffed.

He added that given the amount of area that Cuncolim police station covers, bifurcating the jurisdiction between Cuncolim police station and a new police station at Assolna by upgrading the outpost was the best solution.
