MARGAO: Congress’ South Goa Lok Sabha candidate Capt Viriato Fernandes on Tuesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) aim is to divide people on religious lines and emphasised the need to protect the constitution.

He was addressing the massive rally organised by Congress along with its alliance partners at Margao.

MLAs Vijai Sardesai and Cruz Silva, besides several other leaders called upon the voters of Margao to teach MLA Digambar Kamat a lesson for betraying them.

Capt Viriato claimed that the BJP is afraid of losing and has no other option but to target him by filing false complaints. BJP has no guts for contesting the election in a fair manner.  People must remember that on January 12, 2014 it was the same Narendra Modi who promised special status for Goa and hence the BJP also came forward to file a complaint against him.

“In the prevailing situation we need to save the Constitution and hence people need to vote to protect the Constitution and our heritage, which is our river, environment, Mhadei, etc,” Captain Viriato said.

The Congress candidate said that he gave 26 years of his life in service to the nation and vowed to give the next five years to the nation.

Taking a dig at Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and the BJP, Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai said, “The BJP is engaged in suppressing the voice of the people and opposition. By joining the BJP, Digambar Kamat’s sole motive is to make his son the next MLA of Margao. Now, the people of Margao have to unitedly show that they will not tolerate anything against them.”

“How come Capt Viriato became anti-national when the BJP leaders themselves have spoken on the dual citizenships in the past,” he questioned.
