Says MGP’s support to different parties at different constituencies is a sign the party has lost direction

PONDA: The BJP has labelled the MGP as “confused” for supporting the Congress candidate for Mapusa by-election and an independent for the Mandrem by-election.

To recap, the MGP has also extended its support to the Congress candidates contesting Lok Sabha elections both the South and North Goa seats. However, MGP President Deepak Dhavalikar is locked in a triangular fight with BJP’s Subhash Shirodkar and Congress’ Mhadav Naik in Shiroda by-poll.

Speaking to reporters here, BJP General Secretary Sadanand Shet Thanawade said that MGP’s support for different candidates at different places is a sign of “intellectual bankruptcy and double mind.”

Claiming that the MGP has lost its direction, he said that the party of Bahujans had never supported the Congress in the past. “This, the MGP leaders have forgotten. Their support to Congress it will not impact the BJP,” he said.

“At Mapusa the MGP tells its supporters to vote for the Congress candidate, but in Mandrem they tell their voters to vote for Zeet Arolkar who is an Independent. This shows that MGP is confused and doesn’t know what to do next. And they are yet to decide who to support for Panjim by-election,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar said that the MGP was fooling people by supporting different candidates at different places. “Such tactic will not affect the BJP as far as the victory of Shripad Naik is concerned,” he said.

Addressing a press conference at Deendayal hall Bicholim MLA, Patnekar said, “By playing this dual role, MGP has tried to create suspicions in the minds of people. This trick of MGP will not affect BJP.”

BJP spokesperson Premanand Mhambrey said that the party has completed its first round of campaigning. “From the support we got during the campaigning, we are sure BJP will get huge lead in Bicholim, Sanquelim and Mayem constituencies,” he said.
