MARGAO: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched a new front called ‘Vibrant Margao’ under which candidates will be fielded in all the 25 wards of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) for the ensuing elections. Rajendra Talak is made convener of ‘Vibrant Margao’.

Talak claimed all the 25 candidates have been selected in a democratic process from each ward by asking people who they would want to be their councilor and said he was confident that this time the BJP-backed panel will sweep the polls.

“It is true that we have been kept away from gaining power at Margao Municipal Council for the last three terms,” said BJP Margao Mandal president Rupesh Mahatme who however was confident that things would be different this time even though the Congress and Goa Forward Party (GFP) are coming together to defeat BJP.

The candidates include 7 Catholics, 2 settlers no Muslim. Seven former councillors are contesting this time around as ‘Vibrant Margao’ candidates and they are former MMC chairperson Arthur D’Silva, former councilors Rupesh Mahatme, Sadanand Naik, Ketan Kurtarkar, Rajendra Azgaonkar, Babita Naik and Sugandha Bandekar.

Deputy Chief Minister Babu Ajgaonkar who has served twice as councillor of MMC said it was time the BJP took over the council which is the highest revenue earner amongst all municipalities in Goa. “Our council will have total control over the administration and will work for the development of the economic capital of the State the way it deserves to be,” he said.
