PANJIM: With a beef shortage in the State ahead of the festive season and traders and Church bodies asking the CM to intervene in the issue, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said beef agents will be allowed bring livestock from other States. He also said that the traders can use the Goa Meat Complex to hygienically slaughter the livestock.

“We understand there is shortage of beef ahead of the festival season and hence we have allowed beef agents to get the livestock from other States with permissions,” he said.

He stated that Goa Meat Complex will also resume operations. “Those who have permission to get live animals and slaughter hygienically can use the Goa Meat Complex following proper precautions,” the CM said.

Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), a body of Church, had urged the Chief Minister to resolve the issue of beef shortage in the State due to stoppage in supplies from neighbouring Karnataka. The Karnataka Assembly recently passed a stringent Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill, 2020.

In a memorandum submitted to Sawant on December 15, CSJP urged him to take up the issue with his Karnataka counterpart and request him not to notify the bill in order to protect the livelihood of hundreds of meat traders in Goa, who are dependent on this trade.

Cow slaughter is banned in Goa, but bulls and buffaloes are allowed to be slaughtered at certified abattoirs.
