PORVORIM: The Goa Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously passed the private member resolution moved by Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao demanding that ‘The Chieftains of Cuncolim’ be introduced in the school and college curriculum.

The Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that the Chieftains War Memorial Day will be part of Class XI history subject for Arts stream. He also announced to celebrate the Chieftains Martyrs Day on July 15 every year to commemorate the first uprising by the Goans against the Portuguese rule in 1583. 

The private resolution was supported unanimously in the House with the government accepting it. 

“This private member resolution has been accepted, and it will be introduced by making certain corrections. The line historical facts to be taught without fanning xenophobia of any facts will be removed,” Sawant said. 

He further said that Chieftain Martyrs laid their lives for the cause of ‘Dev, Desh and Dharma’ during the revolt. “They fought against the cruel Portuguese regime. We take inspiration from them and are committed to working for the State and the people,” he added.

Earlier, Archaeology Minister Subhash Phal Dessai said that he has recommended to the government to produce a commercial film on the revolt as a memory and for our future generation to know the history. 

MLA Yuri Alemao moved the resolution and recommended that the contents of ‘The Chieftains of Cuncolim’ be introduced at the appropriate stage in the school and college curriculum consequent to the decision of the Government of Goa to celebrate July 15, 1583 (Cuncolim Revolt) as the National War Memorial Day.

“The deeds of courage, valiant struggle and sacrifices of Goans and especially the people of Cuncolim should be learnt and taught as part of Goa’s political struggle against colonial powers,” he said.

Meanwhile Sawant on Friday paid rich tributes to Chieftains Martyr Memorial at Cuncolim after the government declared July 15 as the Chieftains Martyr Day.

In his address, Sawant said that the government intends to preserve and promote all the important Martyr Memorials in the State that cherish brave history of freedom struggle. As a part of `Azadi Ka Amrit Mahostav’ celebration, the State government will pay special tributes to all such Martyrs memorials on the occasion of Independence Day, he added.
