MARGAO: The recent incident of a bull attacking a 79-year-old British tourist on Benaulim beach has left other British tourists in the area disturbed and concerned for their safety. They are also concerned about the stray dog problem on the beach and point out that they have exercised caution whenever they have had to pass a bull during their walks on the beach.

These tourists are also concerned about the movement of stray animals on the roads too and feel the authorities need to do much more to ensure the safety of tourists and the public.

“It is absurd that these people walk along the beach with dangerous animals. This is not the first time it has happened. A few months ago, in Panjim, two people on a scooter were attacked and ended up in the hospital. They (the bulls) shouldn’t be anywhere near the public. A few days ago, one got loose and ran into a shack at Benaulim. All the diners ran screaming from the place, but nobody was hurt. Why can’t they exercise them in the fields where they hold the bullfights?” voiced a concerned UK tourist.

“We regularly see the bulls being walked on the beach. Usually, they seem very calm, and the boys take good care of them. We always stay away from the bulls when walking; we will walk in the water if necessary to be clear of them. Lots of tourists take photos, and the bulls and the boys allow photos as long as they do not go too close to the bulls. The incident with the lady is really sad. I'm very surprised the bull was allowed to run free; we all assume it had broken free as the dogs started barking and chasing it. There are so many beach dogs that obviously spooked the bull. It hasn't frightened or deterred me or any friends from walking on the beach, as I say, as long as people remain aware that bulls are dangerous animals and do not go too near to them, they should all be okay. Personally, I don't like the idea of them being used for bullfighting, but I realise it’s a Goan tradition, so therefore, it is not for me to say it’s a cruel sport,” said a lady UK tourist, who wished to remain anonymous.
