Goa will lose water if we are not serious: Lobo

PORVORIM: Deputy Speaker and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Tuesday expressed fear of losing water if the State and elected representatives are taking the Mhadei water dispute issue lightly.

“This is a big issue and if we are not serious about this issue the State will lose the water. There was a recent visit for the elected representatives for whom I along with some MLA had gone but what about the others, nobody is serious about the issue. Karnataka has diverted the water completely. I guess they have spent nearly Rs 500 crore,” said Lobo speaking on the motion of thanks to Governor’s address.

He said “We are not doing anything but just talking here on the floor of the house. The minister had recently made assurances but nothing was done. Assurances should just not be given simply but should be fulfilled. The entire basin of which the water flows into Goa has been diverted.”

He further questioned the government’s future plan to save Mhadei water while asking of what are we (government) doing about it or are we just going to keep quiet on this issue.

“Are we serious about the issue? Are we going to the Supreme Court of India to get a stay order or to tell the court to get the whole things (structure) down” Lobo added.
