MARGAO: Public Works Department on Monday commenced the clearing of debris in order to safeguard the adjacent building near Gandhi Market, Margao, where the rare portion of ‘Casa Menezes’ building had collapsed in the wee hours of Saturday.

As informed by Agnelo Fernandes, Chief Officer Margao Municipal Council, the District Collector had directed the PWD officials to clear the site, where assistance from MMC and Fire and Emergency Services was also urged.

It may be recalled that it was a lucky escape for nearly 10 workers, who were sleeping on the other side of the first floor of the old and unsafe building. The building is owned by Agostinho Menezes.

"We are awaiting the reply from the building owner with regard to the procedure of demolition", said Chief Officer.
