Bullfight held in field along Nuvem-Arlem bypass
MARGAO: Around 3000 people flocked to Dovondem on Sunday afternoon to witness the around seven matches of Dhirio or oxen/bullfights. The tournament began at around 1 pm in the field along the Nuvem-Arlem bypass and continued till around 4 pm.
At the entrance of Dovondem ward, two private security guards were posted to stop four wheeler vehicles from entering the ward. But, despite a large crowd which was also visible from the bypass, the event seems to have gone unnoticed by the Fatorda police or the Highway patrol vehicle. Interestingly, the police were informed of the event on the 100 number at 11 am. However, the Fatorda police deny any knowledge of the event and claim that they have not received any complaint from any other department.
During the event, several oxen were injured with multiple cuts. One particular match lasted for more than 10 minutes. Both the oxen had several bruises, with one receiving a deep cut behind the head. Several times during the matches, the oxen came very close to the edge of the arena where spectators were standing. During the matches, the handlers of the respective oxen were seen struggling to divert them away from the crowd.
Far from being deterred, spectators responded to the danger of being mauled by the oxen with excitement and cheer. However, an anxious commentator of the event ensured that no spectator crossed the rope boundary into the arena.
There was no ambulance at the event for any possible human injury. The injured oxen were unceremoniously taken out of Dovondem in pickups.
