VASCO: Cautioning that the cyber criminals are one step ahead, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday called for increased awareness on cyber crimes.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the two-day international conference of Information Security, Privacy and Digital Forensics 2022 jointly organised by the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology and BITS-Pilani Goa campus at the mini auditorium of BITS-Pilani at Zuarinagar, here.
Sawant said that cyber crime is a threat to the progress and security of the nation and there is need to create cyber warriors to combat it. He said that cyber crimes are not easy to investigate because the crime exists in the digital world and therefore there is demand for skilled professionals in this area.
“It is clear that cyber security and digital forensic are integral to the national security,” he said. He also called for addressing privacy issues while talking about social media. He cited that cyber crimes had increased to 5.9 per cent in 2022 compared to 2020. There is a lack of education among people and therefore there is a need to create awareness especially among children.
He also spoke about two lakh square metres of land which had been allotted to the National Forensic Sciences University at Dharbandora. This is the first institute in Goa that offers academic programme, forensic science, cyber security and digital forensic, he said.
NFSU Goa campus director Dr Naveen Kumar and BITS-Pilani Goa campus director Dr Suman Kundu also spoke. Florida International University Professor Dr S S Iyengar was the keynote speaker.
Later, technical sessions on vehicle theft detection and tracking using surveillance video for the modern traffic security management system, digital forensic investigation on Ponzi schemes and application of digital forensic evidence in hit and run; a comparative study with special reference to Section 304 (II) of IPC were held.
