BICHOLIM:  Directing the Goa Police to act strict on the violators as the markets are open, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Monday called upon the concerned authorities to close down the road side vendors.

“There is a need for the police to act tough on the violators who do not use face masks or maintain social distancing. Just levying Rs 100 fine would not be enough. They should be brought to the police station and made to sit there for the whole day,” the Chief Minister informed while speaking at a COVID-19 related review meeting held in the Bicholim Police Station and attended by all the government officials from the town.

“The police have been lenient in law enforcement with the lockdown being relaxed. There is a need to close down the road side vendors who are mostly non-Goans such as the fruit sellers, and those who sell fish and vegetables. Law should be enforced strictly,” he said.

He also instructed the Mamlatdar to survey the area in the market for law enforcement.

“There is a need for announcements on a loudspeaker atleast three times a day. The police and other authorities can take the help of the panchayat and local bodies in this,” he stated.

He called upon the public not to attend birthday parties or weddings. “From what we have known all the cases that have been reported were because of such type of parties. Now we know the cause for increase in cases in the State,” he claimed.

He also instructed the health officers to inform the panch and the councillors if any positive case is reported in their village.

In a major decision, the Chief Minister directed to withdrew the micro containment zone from Gauthan in Sanquelim. He also lamented that there is no seriousness among the people and that they do not maintain social distancing.
