PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has directed Goa Police to crack down on illegal bullfights. The direction comes against the backdrop of increasing such bullfights reported across the State.

“We have asked the police to crackdown on illegal bullfights and police teams have already started working on it,” he said on Tuesday after chairing a meeting of the State Animal Welfare Board.

Amidst quite a few cases registered across different police stations in recent days, the State recorded the death of one bull in a bullfight and injury to another organised at Mandrem last month. Two men from Parra (Bardez) and Kudal (Maharashtra) were arrested for organising the bullfight.

Govansh Raksha Abhiyan (Goa) had also submitted a memorandum to the North District Collector seeking a crackdown on illegal bullfights and illegal beef imports from Karnataka.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has also decided to tighten the noose around operators of illegal pet shops. “A lot of illegal pet shops are operating in the State and this too is cruelty to animals. We need to regularise them or shut them down,” he said.

In the meeting attended by the officials of State Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, NGOs and stakeholders, the CM urged the activists to ensure minimum or no cruelty to animals.

The government has also decided to streamline its existing scheme on providing financial support to NGOs working in the field of animals welfare, by allotting funds to them directly.
