COVID-19 deaths in May cross 1k mark

PANJIM:  With 45 new deaths reported by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) on Tuesday, the total number of deaths since the beginning of May crossed the 1000 figure, rising to 1029 deaths. 

Three of the 45 deaths took place on May 13, May 15 and 16 respectively, while the remaining 42 took place within the last 24 hours of Tuesday evening. 

From these, 26 deaths took place at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), 11 at the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), 3 at a South Goa private hospital, 2 at a North Goa private hospital, 1 at Hospicio Margao, 1 at the North Goa District Hospital (NGDH) and 1 at the Sub-District COVID Hospital in Ponda.

DHS added that three of the 45 persons who died had received the first vaccination dose and that 12 had no co-morbidities. 

Amongst the youngest to succumb to the infection was a 35-year-old woman from Pernem and two 39-year-old men – one from Bastora and one from Siolim.

The total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic has risen to 2,197. 

The daily COVID positivity rate showed a drop to 34.84% on Tuesday, as 1,358 new COVID positive cases were reported while the total number of active cases is now 23,946. On the same day 3,898 were tested, while 1,180 persons were placed under home isolation.


The number of hospital discharges continued to be slightly above the number of patients who were hospitalised.

On Monday, 193 patients were discharged from hospitals and 189 patients were hospitalised. On Tuesday, 199 patients were discharged while 184 new patients were hospitalised.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant tweeted on Tuesday evening that there were 45 vacant oxygen beds at hospitals in Goa.

The recovery rate has also increased to 81.16 per cent with 3120 persons recovering in the last 24 hours.

Due to the disruption in mobile and internet connectivity arising from Cyclone Tauktae, DHS has been unable to share the distribution of active cases in the respective health centres since Monday.
