PANJIM: Chief Secretary Parimal Rai has stressed upon training and effective use of equipments in the war against emergency situations that arise due to fire accidents. 

He was speaking during the National Fire Service Day at the Fire Force Training Ground in Panjim.

Addressing the Fire and Emergency Services personnel, Rai said, “We have to teach everybody how to deal with fire and how to use these equipments to be safe. While I don’t need to tell you what you need to do. But I need your help in creating awareness amongst the children to ensure that they know how to make themselves safe.”

Fire Department Director Ashok Menon informed that the fire and emergency services personnel during the year 2018-19 collectively attended to 7497 fire and emergency calls and saved 116 human lives, 597 animal lives and property worth Rs 89.88 crore.

“As part of the fire prevention strategy the department is adopting a four pronged approach with four Es to ensure fire safety, education, engineering, enforcement and emergency response. The department conducts outreach awareness programmes of dangers of fire and how to respond. Keeping children safe is an important part of fire prevention activities” he said.

He informed that the department has conducted 5650 fire prevention inspections in the state during the year. 

On the occasion 8 personnel, Rui Fernandes, Naresh Borkar, Subhash Naik, Tulshidas Dessai, Hanumant Mapari, Baburao Gawas, Geetesh Naik and Ranjit Redkar, were awarded Commendation Certificates for their contributions to the Department and safety of the lives of the citizens.
