PANJIM: The Nanda Lake of Cacora, Curchorem - one of the state’s biggest wetlands - has got international recognition, getting covered under Ramsar Convention.

Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental global treaty that identifies wetlands around the world, which are of international importance, especially if they provide habitat to waterfowl (about 180 species of birds).

Nanda is also among the several water bodies notified by the state government as its official wetlands under the 2017 Central Government Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules.

India's tally of Ramsar sites has now touched 64, informed Bhupender Yadav, Union Cabinet Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change.

"Absolutely thrilled to inform that 10 more Indian wetlands have got Ramsar recognition as wetlands of international importance. This takes India's tally of Ramsar sites to 64. Special congratulations to Odisha, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh," tweeted the Minister.

Any kind of encroachment, setting up of industry, expansion of existing industries, solid waste dumping, discharge of untreated waste and effluents, poaching and any construction of a permanent nature are among the activities that are prohibited within wetlands.
