CALANGUTE: The Calangute police detained six private four-wheelers and 18 private scooters and motorcycles driven by tourists in the past 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, said Calangute PI Dattaguru Sawant.

“A report will be submitted to the competent court authority and also to the Regional Transport Office for further action,” he said.

The Calangute police had recently launched a Motor Vehicle Act enforcement drive in Calangute to seize private vehicles which were illegally given on rent to tourists. “This drive has been taken up on instructions from the Chief Minister during a recent meeting at the police headquarters,” PI Sawant said.

The detained vehicles included a Toyota Innova, Toyota Fortuner, Bolero, Thar and Hyundai Creta. "The owners will be required to be present in court and will have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 per vehicle,” the PI said.

The police have been seen carrying out similar drives across other towns and villages on the coastal belt, as well as in Panjim. Most tourists who are stopped claim that they are not aware of the rules and have paid a premium to rent the vehicles this season.
