PANJIM: The month-long hectic campaign for the Panjim by-election will conclude on Friday evening. The constituency will vote on Sunday. Counting of votes will be taken up on May 23.

In all 22,482 Panjimites are eligible to cast their vote. They will be voting for the fourth time in a span of two years since the State Legislative Assembly elections held in Feb 2017.

The campaign was laced with allegations and counter-allegations made by BJP, Congress, GSM and AAP who are considered the main contenders.

Removal of the offshore casinos was the major poll plank for the parties, with each trying to score over the other. While the BJP manifesto remained silent on this, Congress, AAP and GSM assured to shift them out of River Mandovi if voted to power.

BJP, which found itself on the backfoot over the casino issue, later said it has proposed to the government not to renew the licences once they expire.

The BJP campaign was focused upon Congress’ candidate Atanasio Monserrate’s criminal antecedents, on the other hand, Congress and GSM targeted BJP’s Sidharth Kuncalienker over the Smart City scam.

The election saw no star campaigners, except for BJP’s senior leader Nitin Gadkari addressing a poll rally on Thursday.

The North District Election Officer has already imposed Section 144 of the IPC in the constituency. Liquor outlets will close on Friday evening and open only on May 19 night.
