Campaigning for Taleigao panchayat election ends today, polling on Sunday

PANJIM: The campaigning for general elections to Taleigao village panchayat scheduled on Sunday, April 28, will come to an end on Friday at 5 pm.

According to the State Election Commission (SEC), around 19,349 voters - 9,206 men and 10,143 women - will exercise their franchise from 8 am to 5 pm.

Meanwhile, four candidates contesting the Taleigao village panchayat polls have been declared unopposed. However, there will be a straight fight in seven wards on Sunday.

The candidates who have been declared elected unopposed are Siddhi Kerkar (ward I), Estella D’Souza (ward VI), Sagar Bandekar (ward X) and Sydney Paul Barreto (ward XI).

Estella and Barreto are sitting panchayat members. They belong to the Taleigao Progressive Development Front.

Mayur Uskaikar (ward I), Pratima Shirodkar (wards III and VI) and Candido Dias (ward XI) withdrew their nomination papers. Now, the candidates in the fray are Agnelo Da Cunha and Domingos Da Cunha (ward II), Emie Rodrigues and Helena Pereira (ward III), Madvi Kankonkar and Ratika Gawas (ward IV), Disha  Murgaonkar and Ushant Kankonkar (ward V), Janu Rosario and Viju Diukar (ward VII) and Emman Dias and Maria Fernandes (ward VIII) and Sanjana Diukar and Vanita Veluskar (ward IX).

The elections will be held on non-party lines through ballot papers at 26 polling booths. The counting of votes will take place on Monday, April 29.

The SEC has set the expenditure limit per ward for a candidate at Rs 40,000. The North Goa Collector has been appointed as the District Election Officer while Tiswadi Mamlatdar has been tasked with the responsibilities of the returning officer.
