PANJIM: Allaying fears of the Campal Heritage Precinct residents, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Wednesday said that the ‘Francisco Luis Gomes Garden’, also known as Campal Garden, will not be handed over to any private company for its management or maintenance.

“The claim that Francisco Luis Gomes Garden is being given to a private company for its management and maintenance is wrong. I want to clarify that there is no such proposal before us,” CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira said.

He said that Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) will soon begin the work to refurbish Francisco Luis Gomes Garden along with three other gardens in the city.

The residents of Campal Heritage Precinct had recently written to the CCP raising apprehension over the alleged move of the City Corporation to hand over the garden to a private firm.

“I welcome CCP Commissioner’s statement if he has made it officially. I would like to thank him. We request CCP to involve and consult the citizens of Panjim while taking decision related to public places,” Armando Gonsalves a well known resident of Campal said.

The other three gardens which will be refurbished by GSUDA include Menezes Braganza Garden, Jardim de Sereia or 'mermaid garden' and Albamar Park.

According to the scope of the work, GSUDA has been tasked to carry out the work of landscape development, refurbishment, re-illumination and integrated landscape of these gardens.
