PANJIM: The Director of Institute of Public Assistance (Provedoria) has been petitioned by Chimbel locals with a plea to stop the proposed felling of century-old trees in the village.

The locals had already visited the Director's office earlier.

Tukaram Kunkalker from Gaulembhat, Chimbel, who wrote the letter, referred to the project document, which is set to come up at survey no 24/2, the ‘Old Age Home’ at Chimbel.

“There is absolutely no need to fell down the 31 century-old trees for which your office had published the tender,” said Kunkalker.

Noting that the present building structure is not in use due to its dilapidated condition, he added that the proposed new old age home building project can be very well set up by removing/demolishing the existing old age structure which is in unsafe condition.

He also attached details regarding the new project plan with suggestions. “In this way you may notice that not a single tree needs to be cut and your authority must not neglect this option in saving these trees,” said Kunkalker.

“Further, it is beyond my understanding the purpose of retaining the old building which is not in safe condition. In view of above, I request you to please review this project once again and request you to please do not proceed on this tree felling plan,” he added.
