Chinchinim market overwhelmed with traffic snarls, locals demand measures

MARGAO: The bustling Chinchinim market area is grappling with severe traffic congestion on a daily basis, particularly along the main road, leading to residents of the village and surrounding areas calling for better measures to be in place to tackle these daily occurring issues.

Concerns have also been raised about accidents occurring here, and residents feel that alleviating the traffic gridlock can reduce not just the risk posed to commuters but also ensure smoother vehicular movement.

The locals point out that this stretch serves as a crucial artery, with residents from Chinchinim, Assolna, Ambelim, Velim, and Cutbona relying on it for their commute.

The traffic volume is further compounded by vehicles from the Assolna Bridge and Orlim junction, as well as surrounding areas like Panzorconi, Sarzora, Dramapur, etc.

Chinchinim Sarpanch revealed that they have raised this pressing issue with the authorities and recently held discussions with the Cuncolim police. Despite the installation of no-parking signboards at the Chinchinim market, Barretto expressed concern over the Cuncolim police's lack of adequate personnel to effectively enforce the rules and issue challans.

The Sarpanch emphasised, "We discussed various village issues, including haphazard parking and proper traffic management. Concerning these problems, we have requested the police's assistance and cooperation.”

He added that they have specifically sought additional police presence on Tuesdays at the Dandevaddo junction, which witnesses a high influx of traffic comprising vehicles dropping off and picking up students from nearby schools, as well as devotees attending mass at St. Anthony Chapel in Deussa,

While the gram sabha had also raised this issue, Barretto acknowledged that the panchayat lacks land to construct a dedicated parking facility and urged residents to adhere to traffic rules, refraining from haphazard parking of their two- and four-wheelers.

Barretto added that they will look at contacting an NGO to create awareness on this issue in the future.
