MARGAO: It has been revealed that the Cuncolim Police Station, having vast jurisdiction, is facing shortage of staff and vehicles, and hence the police are unable to work efficiently towards the safety of residents at the need of the hour.

Considering the plight of police station, The Green Goa Foundation (GGF), an organisation working towards the social issues has urged Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, besides all other concerned authorities to look into the matter at the earliest.

The GGF Chairman Raison Almeida has submitted a memorandum to the office of Chief Minister in this regard. The GGF has observed that the police vehicles do not reach the site of accidents on time and therefore call upon the above authorities to take action within 30 days, failing which they will approach the High Court.

In the memorandum, the GGF has stated that the Cuncolim Police Station has jurisdiction over an extreme vast area compared to the jurisdiction of other police stations within the State of Goa, which ranges from the Chinchinim junction at one end to village Paddi at other end, and extends from Cuncolim Industrial Estate to Cutbona Jetty from east to west, covering within its limits several schools, churches, temples and offices including factory workers.

“It has been brought to the notice of GGF that Cuncolim Police being given the responsibility of such a vast area, they are not in a position to handle their responsibility towards the residents of Cuncolim efficiently and timely due to non-availability of police vehicles,” Almeida stated.

He said, “There are several accidents and other incidents such as thefts and fights taking place, where the interference of police is necessary. However, whenever the police help is called for, the police are unable to reach on time either due to reasons of no head constable or no police vehicles and as such mostly no panchanama is conducted in time.”

Further, Almeida alleged that most of the police vehicles do not arrive on time as the vehicles are being diverted to their convenience for reasons best known to the police officials.
