PONDA: The pedestrians in Ponda are facing inconvenience as the markings of zebra crossing at various spots have faded away and are in immediate need of repainting.

There are altogether 16 total Zebra Crossings in the Ponda Municipal Council jurisdiction and 8 in the villages, most of which are in Borim Village Panchayat area. The crossings at Almeida High School, old bus stand, Hotel Menino, Bagayatdar Bazaar, Upper Bazaar, government school at Juna Bazaar, Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir, Government High School-Sadar, police station, State Bank of India, Court and other places have faded to an extent where it’s hardly noticeable.

The stretch of road at Borim, on the Ponda-Margao highway, is narrow and is one of the most accident-prone zones in the State. The pedestrians are often caught off guard by oncoming vehicles as they try to cross the road without using the faded zebra crossing.

Increase in traffic also means the rise in stress on Traffic Police personnel, who have to stay alert all the time especially when high school students are crossing the roads.

“Letters have been written to the Chief Officer of Ponda Municipal Council and the PWD to repaint the zebra crossings in the town. The work for the road crossings that come under the jurisdiction of panchayat area have also been mentioned. There are police personnel deployed in front of the high schools but the painting work is still necessary,” Ponda RTO Police Inspector Krishna Sinari stated.

Meanwhile, there is often blockage on the road near Borim’s Saibaba Temple during the rush hours in the morning as well as in the evening. Since the repainting work is yet to be done, the public, especially the devotees on Thursday, who visit the temple in large numbers, have to wait to cross the road for longer than usual period.
