Is Borim Bridge fit for vehicular traffic?

Citizen Cristy A Gomes Margao

I am a regular motorist on the Margao-Ponda road. I see the Borim  bridge has been further burdened with a new steel structure on both sides to prevent suicides and throwing of garbage into the river.

This structure will put unnecessary load on the already weak bridge.

Besides, the bridge is full of potholes and is damaged with cracked cement, instead of being a smooth surface so that the vibrations are minimised and also to increase its safety aspect. But Borim bridge is opposite of that concept.

The steel fencing has put additional load on the bridge. The rusted structure, fitted in the rain and coated with paint will only give temporary protection against corrosion.

The bridge is so weak that if one is stands on one side they can feel the vibrations when a car passes on the other side. In fact when a heavy vehicle crosses, the whole span vibrates.

Many bridges have fallen down due to the effects of mechanical resonance. If a structure begins to vibrate in a violent manner, it’s liable to fail mechanically and this can quickly lead to its total destruction.

Will concerned authorities please act soon and avoid an imminent tragedy?
