MARGAO: The ongoing works of sewerage network right from the District Collectorate building to Colva circle, old market is being carried out by the contractor without following safety measures and thus posing a grave risk to pedestrians and motorists.
This criminal negligence on part of the contractor has turned the road into a death trap. People alleged that the barricades erected by the contractor are not to save lives but to save his money.
Roland Martins, Coordinator of GOACAN feels that it violates the order issued by the South Goa District Collector, which clearly stipulates the terms and conditions to the contractor.
“The only focus of the authority, right from the district hospital to the Colva circle is traffic diversion and not public safety,” Martins alleged.
As pointed out by Roshan Prabhugaonkar, one can find the metal plates and other materials right on the footpath, causing hardships to pedestrians and also inviting the risk.
It has been also observed that the barricades at the ongoing work at Colva circle is an open invitation for injuries and deaths, as the safety measures seem to be of less importance.
Even the signboards are dumped all over when the order states that the work area should be properly barricaded to prevent accidentally falling of pedestrians, motorists and cattle.
“The barricades should be properly illuminated with red light, glowing/reflective taps, etc, for better visibility during night time,” order further stated.
And hence, the citizens have demanded the authority and especially the contractor to take all the necessary safety measures as listed in the guidelines issued by the District Collector.
