Matanhy  Saldanha Bridge at Dando Mollo in Velsao is in total darkness for more than a year now. The bridge has 3 high mast tower lights, fitted by Tourism Department, out of which, only one light at far end of the bridge is working. The other two near residential area are not functional for more than a year. The authorities concerned are not doing anything to repair these lights. Local Electricity Department says it is Tourism Department’s job. While the Department says they need a crane to repair the lights. All our requests to the authorities to repair the lights have gone in vain. The Sarpanch, Henriques D’Mello informed that he has sent two requests but nobody turned up to fix these lights. At night the bridge is in total darkness.

The domestic tourists are taking advantage of this darkness and organize night parties on the bridge with loud music, consuming alcohol and throw empty beer cans and broken bottles all over the place. At night they also park their cars and bikes in the middle of the bridge and click photos and videos, creating nuisance under the cover of darkness.

This matter has been highlighted several times in some local news channels, yet the authorities concerned failed to curb and stop this menace. The local residents are facing great hardships due to this. If it is difficult to repair and maintain the high mast tower lights due to want of heavy equipments like crane, etc then these lights can be replaced by fixing LED lights at half mast, so that it can be repaired easily. Or the nearest street light line be extended up to the bridge, so that entire bridge is illuminated.

Hope the authorities concerned will act at the earliest and ensure normalcy returns in the life of the local residents.
