PONDA: The Borim-Bethora bypass on the Margao-Belagavi National Highway has turned into an eyesore, with miscreants dumping garbage on both sides of the secluded stretch. Sick of the foul stench emanating from the waste, and the sight of rotting garbage strewn along the road, the villagers have now demanded that CCTV cameras be installed to nab the culprits, and prevent the menace.

Almost all kind of mixed waste is dumped on the stretch, including domestic and food waste and construction debris, say villagers.

Social worker Viraj Sapre remarked that a mini Sonsoddo dump has been developed on the Bethora-Borim bypass.

He said, “Since this three-km stretch is isolated, passersby often hurl garbage out of their vehicles here, and escape scot-free. To add to the problem, trucks are parked on both sides of the road.”

He added though the local Borim and Bethora Village Panchayats clear their garbage, special attention should be paid to this stretch.

“The authorities should install CCTV cameras to keep a vigil in this area,” he added.
