Stray cattle a nuisance in capital city

Stray cattle are a real nuisance in Panjim in particular and the State in general. These bovines were captures on camera as they were been feasting on garbage in the night at Rua de Ourem in Panjim.

Most of the animals come from the nearby areas of Merces, Santa Cruz and Taleigao to eat garbage that is dumped by the roadside in the capital city. The animals then loiter around, squat in the middle of the road and many motorists knock them down at night. Often there are fatal mishaps reported too.

It is a dirty habit among dairy farmers to milk their animals during the day and then release them at nights to fend for themselves. The bovines then march to the city and feed on whatever that is available. The concretisation of hills and fields in Goa has resulted in the dwindling of grazing ground forcing the strays to move to the city to eat whatever rubbish that is available. Often the poor animals end up eating plastic and often choke and die.

The authorities should impound these strays, send them to gaushalas and impose stiff penalties on the owners for negligence.
