First of all, I would like to say ‘well done’ to the Taleigo Panchayat for posting some great signage along their road, ‘Keep village clean’, ‘No mobiles and Wear helmets’, etc.

However, all the signages are written in English. As an English speaker and reader, this is great for people like me who read English. What happens to majority of the public in Goa? Can they understand these signages if they can’t read the language. Therefore, shouldn’t these signs be written in two languages, English and Konkani or Hindi?

This will encourage people to take notice of the signs and perhaps adhere to them too. At this stage, I find people totally ignoring these signs as dumping garbage on the roadsides and farms is continuously increasing (more so near the panchayat). Also, riders without helmets are still in abundance on these roads. Especially, young underage children riding scooters and motorcycles to school without adult supervision are waiting for accidents to happen. Do these kids have licences?

Lastly the signage depicting, ‘Wear helmet while driving’ is technically incorrect because one rides a bike and does not drive a bike. This sign should be amended. The picture included displays the error.
