Utorda Beach erosion needs urgent attention

Utorda Beach erosion needs urgent attention

Utorda Beach front is being destroyed by soil erosion and few remains of the sand dunes are being washed away every year and if corrective measures are not taken immediately then the effects could be drastic.

A day is not far where the sea water would invade the land and cause a severe damage both to lives of the people and environment. A corrective action is a must.  I have observed that for all these years sea had its own course of action without harming nature or soil erosion. Only of late it has seen this happening at Utorda. It is manmade erosion.

We humans destroy nature's course of action by building concrete structures, rubble walls along the coast lines for self-personal interests and flattening of natural formed sand dunes for selfish interests.

In the past during the High Tide, especially during monsoons the sea water level raised forming high waves. These waves would come and hit the naturally formed sand dunes and would go back.

The process was such that it never harmed the nature. It was so natural process. But off late on the coastal belt, the dunes are destroyed by which the process is lost and now the waves hit the manmade concrete wall and reverse action force moves right or left after hitting, causing soil erosion etc...This phenomenon is manmade and it is called as Scouring effect.

Government authorities should check on these illegalities done to nature and I am sure everything will fall in place. In all I can say, “We destroy nature... Nature destroys us.”

Another Villager Filomeno D’Sousa echoed his sentiments recalling many years ago Utorda Beach was regarded as a virgin beach. After the influx of five star hotels, the situation has changed drastically. The sand dunes have been wiped out, there is soil erosion causing the coconut trees to fall and stagnation of filthy water on the beach front.”

Seby Fernandes says the state of Utorda Beach is in sorry state. It is time to save and heal the nature. He suggests simple sand bags lining along the coast could solve the problem.

According to another villager, the boulders rip-rap foundation or an Irish river crossing will solve this yearly occurring problem of erosion.  I request the concerned authorities to take corrective action immediately.
