The decision was taken unexpectedly on Monday evening and Tariq Thomas was moved out in a move that people felt was due to the recent decisions taken

MARGAO: The unexpected transfer of South Goa Collector Dr Tariq Thomas on Monday evening has not gone down well with citizens and activists. In a decision that took everyone by surprise, Dr Thomas has been transferred and has been replaced by Agnelo Fernandes who earlier held the charge of Additional Collector of South Goa.

Dominic Noronha, former Sarpanch of Sirlim Dramapur, said Thomas had held a meeting with officials regarding the pollution of the tributary of river Sal near Chinchinim junction caused by disposal of animal waste by slaughterhouses. “He had started taking action on this issue which previous collectors and other departments had ignored. How can they transfer him for no reason?”

Another activist, Sanjeev Raiturkar said the collector had taken two very important decisions. “He issued a notification that every construction in 20 Kms radius of Dabolim Airport requires permission from the navy. He also had sent suggestions to the South Goa Planning and Development authority to freeze or restrict construction around the South Goa Collectorate building because the area is facing traffic jams every day. Looks like he paid the price for this”, he said.

Judith Almeida, an activist from Colva, said that is a very humble and intelligent officer and he didn’t deserve to be transferred like this. “Is this the way we award dedicated officers? Thomas knew what Goa was like before since he came here during his training. He was an honest and non-corrupt officer”, she said.

Thomas had also requested the State government to sanction funds to repair the broken toilets in the Collectorate and to purchase a JCB to restore land which was damaged due to illegal landfilling.

The staff of the Collector was also shocked by the transfer order. “Some staff even cried since they could not even give him a proper farewell”.  Almost everyone Herald spoke to agreed that Thomas was the best Collector South Goa has had in the recent times. Thomas was posted in Goa in July 2018.
