PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the authorities to ensure that the bio-medical waste stacked in huge piles at Sonsoddo is cleared without delay.

During the hearing on Monday, Margao Municipal Council submitted to the Division bench comprising Justice MS Sonak and Justice M S Jawalkar that the State government has appointed a specialised agency, Goa Health Monitoring Services, to collect bio-medical waste and dispose it in accordance with the rules. The agency has been informed about the bio-medical waste stacked at Sonsoddo and the Council awaits that the agency clears it.

MMC assured the Court that this waste has now been disinfected. “MMC will pursue this matter with this agency and see that this waste is cleared up at the earliest,” the MMC representative Adv Pandiyar said.

Advocate General Devidas Pangam also stated that the matter will be looked into and a statement will be made by the next date following which the Court adjourned the matter to June 28. The Bench also said that all efforts will have to be made to see that the bio-medical waste at Sonsoddo site is cleared at the earliest so that it does not give cause for any further hazards.
