Says fight against pollution to continue: Reiterates commitment to manage and reduce pollution of coal handling; Claims to have brought down pollution by 75% in last 3 months

MARGAO: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday blamed the Congress for letting the coal come to Goa and has reiterated his commitment to manage and reduce the pollution of coal handling. He has advised curtailment of power use if one doesn’t want to have coal in Goa.

“I agree there has to be no pollution and we shouldn’t allow it. We have taken action and brought it down by 75 per cent in last three months by curtailing the handling capacity,” he said, speaking to the media.

Taking a dig at the earlier Congress CM, he said he had not provided this present setup and it was given by the Congress.

“There is no reason why there has to be pollution, as there is advise to modernise the handling to have no pollution at all,” he said, adding that

one can’t be against coal and consume power too as the power we consume in Goa is 90 per cent thermal power generated from coal.

“It is logical as the power we are using is 95 per cent thermal based” the CM pointed out.

“What are we saving? What is our contribution to environment? We should reduce the use of power, stop using air conditioners, use a cycle, ditch big cars. All these aspects of environment conservation have to be looked into by the people who talk about pollution. I am ready to, I don’t use plastic and I am ready to use motorcycle or car pool,” Parrikar said.
