MAPUSA: In view of incidents of rising thefts and house-breaking incidents, the Colvale Police during a tenant verification drive on Thursday, arrested 96 persons from the ‘Lala Ki Basti’ locality at Madel, Tivim, on allegations of residing without proper documentation and verification.

According to police sources, the arrests were made as part of a crackdown on individuals staying on rent without the necessary legal paperwork and as part of tenant verification.

It is pertinent to note that ‘Lala ki Basti’, which is on comunidade land, is known for its notoriety.

Authorities revealed that the arrested individuals were found to be residing in rented accommodations without submitting tenant verification forms by the house owners. House owners have been summoned to the police station to provide explanations regarding the absence of these crucial documents.

During the checking, after it was found that only one person could produce documents, the others were arrested under Section 41 CrPC.

It is learnt that the police started the drive in view of incidents of rising thefts and house-breaking incidents.

In response to the incident, the police have issued a stern warning to all property owners, including those managing hotels, guesthouses and construction sites, to ensure the completion of tenant verification forms for all occupants. Failure to comply could result in legal consequences.

The Colvale Police, who spearheaded the operation, emphasised the significance of tenant verification in crime prevention and detection.

“The tenant verification drive was conducted to create awareness among the public about the importance of carrying out proper checks to prevent criminal activities,” the police said.

Highlighting the utility of tenant verification information, authorities emphasised its role in solving crimes and apprehending offenders swiftly. They further stated that similar drives will be carried out in other areas falling in their jurisdiction across the State, to ensure comprehensive tenant verification and enhance overall safety and security measures.

It may be recalled that in November last year, the High Court of Bombay at Goa had ordered demolition of encroachments carried out by the people on the Comunidade land in Tivim.
