MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council is struggling to act against illegal dumping of waste in the jurisdiction of civic body, as ward number 12 of Comba locality has turned into a mess as a result of mixed waste in large quantities being dumped by the roadside.

However, on Tuesday local councillor Sagun alias Dada Naik was kind enough to use machinery to remove the pile of garbage over here.  Speaking to mediapersons, Naik said that the garbage was of a mixed nature, mostly including restaurant waste. Medical waste too has been dumped over here.

"We received complaints from the locals in this regard that there was a foul smell in the area due to the waste dumped, and they were afraid of health hazards,” he stated.

He further thanked local MLA Digambar Kamat for helping him by providing JCB and trucks to remove the waste.  “Now, that the place has been cleaned, and hence it is my appeal to the people not to engage in throwing their garbage over here,” Naik said.

Further, Naik said that he has installed two CCTV cameras over here at his own expense to curb these types of waste dumping and if there is any further dumping of waste, it will be possible for the municipality to take action against the culprits through CCTV footage.

He said, “Since the garbage is being dumped near the garbage collection centre shed, they have asked the municipality to shift it to a more suitable  location.”
