PANJIM: The voter going to vote for Lok Sabha polls on Tuesday, May 7, needs to know about the workings of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and VVPAT (voter-verifiable paper audit trail) and ensure that his/her vote is gone to the right candidate.

When a voter goes to the polling booth, he/she first sees that green light glowing before pressing the blue button.

After pressing the blue button, the red light will glow. If the green light is on before the red light glows after pressing the blue button then immediately inform the presiding officer.

After pressing the blue button the voter has to see the slip on the VVPAT machine, which will display the party symbol and serial number the voter has cast for. The slip of VVPAT will display for seven seconds and when the slip drops the voter will hear a beep sound.

This will ensure that your vote is correctly and successfully cast. This is crucial in the election in view of apprehensions by the voters and the voter who has cast the vote should enlighten the people so that their vote too is recorded correctly.

HERALD OPINION

Reject those who attempt to give inducements, across candidates and parties

At the end of the day, voting in a democracy is one of the holiest exercises a citizen can conduct.

Voting is not only a symbol of his/her right but an affirmation of duty which is why it is even more imperative that those forces who attempt to tarnish this holy exercise through inducements - monetary and in kind are rejected.

Malpractices which are used to bend or twist the direction of these people’s celebrations have no place in democracy and they will be in the conscience of anyone who insults democracy’s highest honour – the vote.

You only have to ensure that this does not happen but also make sure that you don’t allow this to happen elsewhere and report it.
