PANJIM: Extending its support to those protesting the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) coal berth expansion, the Congress party has accused the State and Central Governments of trying to promote Goa as coal hub at the cost of public health.

Addressing media persons on Thursday, Congress media cell chairman Adv Yatish Naik questioned the State government’s silence on the controversy, where locals as well as social activists are up-in-arms against MPT’s coal berth expansion that is leading to pollution.

“It is the constitutional duty of the government to provide clean and healthy environment to its people. But in Goa, it seems to be otherwise,” Naik said.
