VASCO: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) vice president Sankalp Amonkar on Thursday demanded that the government intervene and address various financial issues of the taxi operators.

Addressing media persons, Amonkar said, “Since COVID pandemic people are facing unemployment issue. People had taken loans from banks for business, house repairs, medical treatment, education etc. In Goa, the situation is such that the people, who have opted for loan, are having problems. There is no earning for these people and this has also brought down their capacity to pay their loan EMI.”

“Banks after the completion of moratorium period which was given by the Reserve Bank of India, after August 1, have started pressurising the loan beneficiaries. The Government has not taken any steps to intervene and help people. The RBI has announced moratorium to the nationalised banks for six months," said Amonkar.

He said a considerable number of people from Mormugao taluka are into taxi business and they are suffering on account of no business as their capacity to pay EMI has gone down.

“I want all four MLAs of Mormugao taluka to intervene and waive off the additional interests on the loans of the people. The government should come up with solution on this issue," he demanded.

Gangaram, a taxi operator said, “I met the Chief Minister and put forth taxi operators’ grievances. Banks are harassing and forcing us to pay our EMIs. Business has not picked up. Four MLAs should intervene and provide relief to us.”

Another taxi operator Umesh Mandrekar, said, “We do not have business, we demand that the government waive off our EMI and provide us some relief.”
