PORVORIM: The much-awaited construction of a Fire Station and Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter has begun in Porvorim and this will be the third fire station in Bardez taluka.

This project comes under the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Projects which is funded by the World Bank is roughly to the tune of 4.83 crore. Premier Builders Goa Pvt Ltd has bagged the contract and is expected to complete the project by January, 2020.

Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte informed that the fire station would serve the Porvorim constituency and surrounding areas. In case of a fire or emergency, all that matters is the time taken to reach the spot. Fire fighters from Pilerne and Mapusa fire stations take a long time to reach Porvorim due to the heavy traffic on the highway.

“Earlier, in case of fire or emergency, we had to be dependent on the fire stations in Mapusa, Pilerne and Panjim. But connecting to Porvorim was becoming difficult due to the increase in traffic on the highway,” Khaunte said.

“It was the demand of all the three panchayats in this jurisdiction that there was a need for a full-fledged fire station for Porvorim constituency. This project also has an arrangement to give shelter to the people affected during a cyclone,” he added.

Besides Khaunte, Director of Fire and Emergency Services Ashok Menon was present for the foundation stone laying ceremony for the project.

Menon informed that the fire station will have modernized equipments. “This will not only cater to Porvorim but also when required will attend calls of the Mapusa and Pilerne fire stations,” he informed.

“This project is one of its kind and it will also have a multipurpose cyclone shelter. It will be looking after the fire and emergency on the highways as well,” he added.
