MARGAO: Incessant rains for the last so many days have damage the paddy crops in Curtorim, and many parts of Salcete taluka and farmers foresee heavy loss.

According to  J Santano Rodrigues, Chairman of Curtorim Bio-Diversity Committee, many farmers from his village have reported damage to their crops due to the continuous rainfall. “The harvesting time is nearing and continuous rains have created tense situations between the farmers”.

Farmers like Seby Fernandes, Menino Pais, besides others have claimed that their crops have been damaged due to the rains these days.

"The crops are almost ready for the harvesting but the rains continue to pour.  The harvesting of the crops will commence in the next few days. Many farmers from Curtorim are upset due to damage caused to their crops," said Santano.

There are reports from the other parts of Salcete taluka with regard to fear of losing their crops, if the rains continue to pour.

Another farmer from Seraulim also expressed fear of losing the crops due to the rains at the time of harvesting period.

"Our crops have been badly affected due to the flooding in the recent days. Now, we fear more losses. The hard work put in by us will go in vain if we lose the crops," said the farmer.

Few farmers also expressed no hopes of compensation from the government if they suffered a loss.

"Many farmers are yet to get compensation from the government for the loss to crops in the recent times, and hence there is no point trying to claim again," said Santano.
