PANJIM: In yet another incident of negligence, a young worker suffered an electric shock during an ongoing smart city work near Jama Masjid in Panjim. The workers was not given rubber boots or gloves while carrying out the work. Also he was not instructed about the underlying cables, due to which the young labourer struck an electric cable twice leading to him getting a mild shock.

The incident occurred on Friday morning. The youth who was virtually shocked after the incident stated that he was not informed by the contractor about the cables and wires that were underground. With no knowledge about the underground wires, the young worker began digging the ground where an electric cable was present. After striking the wire twice, a tiny blast took place leading to a mild electrocution.

Locals and workers rushed to help the boy.

The work near Jama Masjid pertains to the reconstruction of the newly built drainage, which was not proper. As a result, the shopkeepers and residents had to face flooding, when Panjim experienced torrential rains on April 20.

Workers blamed the contractor and the government for not informing the labourers about the work properly. Despite knowing that the area was dangerous, the contractor did not equip the workers with any safety gear and protection.

The young worker had requested proper boots to walk on the uneven terrain, but the contractor denied him the same.

Panjim residents have raised concerns over this haphazard work taking place across Panjim in the name of Smart City. In making the city smart, Panjim residents have to suffer due to the repercussions of the Smart City works.

Meanwhile, Panjim Police Inspector Vijaykumar Chodankar stated that they had no information about the incident and no case had been filed.
