MAPUSA: Co-operation Minister, Govind Gaude on Monday clarified that the government has no plans to take over the Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank of Goa Ltd (MUCB).

Speaking at the inauguration of a new branch of Dayanand Urban Co-Operative Credit Society at Mapusa, he said the government is in talks with other banks to take over.

“There are a huge number of depositors at Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank and hence it is our prime duty to safeguard the interest of the depositors. We have already written to the Central Government asking the status and process for taking over of the bank. We will ensure that the MUCB depositors and shareholders get justice,” said Gaude.

Mapusa MLA, Joshua D’Souza applauded the bank for opening four branches within a short span of seven years.

“I would like to wish this organisation all the best in its future endeavours and may it turn out to be a profitable venture. I am sure they can open 12 branches within the next few years,” said Joshua.

Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson Ryan Braganza was also present.
