PERNEM: Is the fear raised by the people of Pernem that water will be diverted for Mopa Airport project turning into a reality?

From the past one week, people from different parts of the Pernem taluka have been complaining about acute water scarcity. People in Corgao have been buying packaged water for drinking and cooking.

The scarcity of water was always a major issue for Pernem taluka as the demand was high while the supply was limited.

Right from Palyem village to Corgao, Pernem and other parts have been complaining about water scarcity and have been staying awake till late nights just to collect water from their taps.

Raising a question whether the water is being diverted to new airport at Mopa, Gurudas Shetye a resident Pethechawada Corgao said, from last six days, we are struggling for water.

“Earlier we used to get water on alternate days but it is not the same anymore. Water trickles down the taps for just an hour in some homes while the others have not got a drop for the last many days. When enquired at the Chandel plant, it was revealed that water supply was in full swing. Is the water being diverted for the newly inaugurated airport at Mopa,” asked Shetye.

“We only get oral assurances that water would be supplied but on ground nothing is happening. Water is basic necessity but the Government is failing to fulfil the needs of the people and the elected representatives are nowhere to be seen.

The concerned authorities should come up with a solution for this issue,” another local said.
